Attention Ptarmigan Hunters: Scientists Need Your Help!

If you hunt white-tailed ptarmigan, you could make a valuable contribution to a scientific investigation. Scientists are looking to obtain tissue samples from white-tailed ptarmigan in western Canada, which will be used for a DNA study aimed at figuring out how distinct different populations are across the species’ range – from Alaska to New Mexico. The project is a collaboration between scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of British Columbia, and the information generated will help with management of the species. Tissue donations (e.g., wing, head) from hunters would be very helpful; even a single sample can yield a substantial amount of information. We would pay for shipping and would be happy to share our findings with hunters that contribute samples if they are interested.
